In March 2024, we hosted an interdisciplinary workshop exploring urban inequalities and transport accessibility in Cape Town. The workshop brought together post-graduates and recent graduates (0-5 years) from urban-related disciplines such as Transportation, Geography, Urban Planning, and Architecture.
The workshop took a deep dive into existing and potential urban challenges faced by individuals and communities in Cape Town, particularly in relation to land use and transportation development. Participants brainstormed and discussed strategies to address these issues. Dr. Ruth Nelson shared research produced in conjunction with colleagues from Delft University of Technology on spatial distributive justice for urban planning, and attendees connected and shared ideas on these important topics.
Drinks and light eats were provided.

About the Organisers #
Dr. Ruth Nelson is a spatial data scientist with a background in Architecture, holding a PhD from the Centre for Urban Science and Policy at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Ruth has both a Master’s in Architecture (Nelson Mandela University) and an MRes in Space Syntax (University College London), and has previously worked in corporate, consulting, and research roles in South Africa, the UK, Mexico, and the Netherlands.
The wider project team included Associate Professor Dr. Trivik Verma and Prof.dr. Martijn Warnier from Delft University of Technology.
